We offer a range of exciting work placements for school and college students, primarily within our design department.
Working with our design manager, students gain work experience tailored to their individual requirements and desired outcomes. Be it a one-week placement or a six-month internship, we welcome young creatives to our team!
Standfast & Barracks is proud to work alongside universities nationwide, offering factory tours and work placements.
We host live creative projects, setting our textile students a task, which our in-house designers judge on completion.
In the past, winners have seen their designs printed on cloth, which they have gone on to show in their final exhibitions and at New Designers.
We’ve also showcased winning designs at prestigious tradeshows in Italy, London and Germany, creating a very special kind of buzz for both our students and us!
We offer one year long graduate design placements, giving textile design graduates the opportunity to develop the skills they have learnt on their course and apply to a real-life working environment. This gives them the opportunity to develop their portfolio and learn from our experienced team.
Chloe Nalwoga – Design Graduate Intern “While working in the design studio, I have enjoyed drawing and designing collections for customers. I have found learning about the colouration process very interesting and have gained valuable experience using Best Image and Photoshop to create colourways.”
Molly Smith – Design Work Experience “I enjoyed learning about the initial processes of fabric printing and I found it interesting to learn about the marketing and sales side of the business. It was great to work alongside the Designers and I particularly found that my work placement allowed me to develop my photoshop skills.”
Libby Gallagher – Design Work Experience “My work experience was very engaging and it was fascinating to see the process from start to finish – from when a Designer is first given a brief, to the bulk printing of the finished product.”

We’re proud of our amazing heritage at Standfast & Barracks, and recently collaborated with Mirador arts charity to curate our “Behind the Wall” exhibition. This fascinating public art project was a celebration of our history and the lives of the employees past and present who have shared our story.
The exhibition included works from several world-renowned artists and was officially unveiled at Lancaster Museum in March 2018.
As part of our Heritage Open Days programme, Standfast & Barracks occasionally throws opens its factory doors to the public and selected groups.
It’s a chance to delve deeper into our rich history and take a tour round our Grade II listed factory. Attendees are invited to watch our skilled printing operatives in action, providing a fascinating insight into both traditional and hi-tech printing methods.
Factory tours for other groups may be available on request. For enquiries please contact us.
